U1W2 - 2019

Unit 1 Week 2             Week of August 19th, 2019

OPEN HOUSE is NEXT MONDAY!!!

Dear Family Member:

THINKING MAPS - Tools for Learning

Last week, we introduced you to the CIRCLE MAP. This week we are introducing the BUBBLE MAP.

BUBBLE MAPS!!!!
"What's that?" you say?  Well, it's a map used to describe qualities using adjectives and adjective phrases... Ex.  pretty, funny, dirty, tall, short, prickly, etc...

This is what one looks like.

We will be using these with our Reading curriculum, Math, as well as Science and Social Studies.  Look for them.  Ask your child to explain what they are used for. And now you know, IF they can't, you'll be able to "remind" them!

Reading - Wonders

This week our class will be focusing on what it’s like where people live. We will be talking about how we describe our environment, including our homes and neighborhoods and the people who live in them.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout
  • Words to Know Help your child use words to tell about what he or she sees outside out a window from your home or car.

  • Spelling: short i  - You will spell a word and your child will say it. You can have your child draw and label pictures of short i words. This week’s phonic sound is the short i sound, as in sit, win, and pill.

Comprehension: key details

Help your child read a story and then retell the events from the story in the correct order.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Every Friday there is a weekly assessment that your child will take that includes skills from these concepts that we are covering in reading! Continue to review with your child, login to CONNECTED, and utilize the available online components.

Spelling Test-

Your child's MAIN Spelling List is located on the PENCIL shape.  However, many of your children are able to spell our basic spelling words being tested on right now.  In order to keep them engaged and challenged, there are 10 ENRICHMENT WORDS also listed on their weekly skills page.

You can log into Spelling City https://www.spellingcity.com/users/anniehopkins to practice the spelling words. Click on the current week's list.  This can be done ONE time on Thursday evenings! It is not required to be done every night!

Please study ALL of the spelling words on your child's skill sheet. The main spelling words are always located in your child's binder.  You are able to review the words over the weekend and get a head start.

The enrichment spelling words are there to challenge your child NOT frustrate them! If you find that this is happening, please let us know.  Your child can earn extra points for any enrichment words that they spell correctly. Enrichment words cannot hurt their spelling grade, only help it.

My Math-

You will find homework in your child's folder that will cover these concepts. You are also able to login online to practice skills in preparation for our Your child's login information for ConnectED is located in the front of their binder.

Please, please  STUDY the Math Vocabulary!  They were sent home and always will be sent home at the beginning of every new chapter.
