U3W1

Week of November 14th, 2016

Wonders-
Dear Family Member:
If your student will be absent on a test day like Friday please let us know in advance. We may be able to keep you caught up.
This week our class will be focusing on the different ways we can measure time. Time can be measured by a clock, a shadow, and even an hour glass.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
  • Words to Know -work with your child and makeup questions and answers using the vocabulary words.
  • Spelling/Phonics: long a - Help your child make crossword puzzles for pairs of spelling words. This week’s phonic sound is the long sound, as in cakewave, and late.
Comprehension: character, setting, plot
Your child will identify the character, setting, and what happens in a story. Then he or she will draw a picture to show the missing part of each story
Accelerated Reader:
Since most of the wonderful first graders completed their AR goal, our new individual AR goals for this nine weeks have been set! Please make sure that your child keeps reading! The kids are already working hard at earning the points! Keep up the great work!
*****Spelling Test-******
Please remember to log into spellingcity.com to practice the spelling words!

******Weekly Test-*******
Our weekly test will cover skills we have learned in class. These skills can be practiced on http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do .
Login using the ID cards sent home .
My Math-
Lesson 4: Problem-Solving Strategy: Write a Number Sentence

LESSON 5

Here is a sample problem and how you can solve it.

15-8= ?
We break 8 apart into 5 and 3 so we can
Use the 10 facts to help us get the answer.

We know that 15-5=10

We took three from eight to get five so take 3 from 10 to get 7

Now we know that 15-8= 7

PLEASE let us know if you have any other questions. The goal is that the students should understand the concept in order to do it from home independently.

Writing

This week our opinion focus will be on the best part of Thanksgiving. We will write to tell our opinion on the subject of Thanksgiving after reading several books on the subject.

At the end of the nine weeks, we will be selecting the best writing piece from the whole first grade to be displayed at Little Caesars. This will be selected from our " Belmont Writes".
